LIGHTNING BOLT - SINCE 1971

Born in the heart of Hawaii in 1971, Lightning Bolt was never just another surfboard brand, it was a statement. Conceived during a golden era of surfing, the Bolt quickly became a symbol recognized around the world, embodying the pure energy, freedom, and authenticity of the sport. With its striking logo and uncompromising performance, Lightning Bolt wasn’t about following trends, it was about creating them, shaping the culture and attitude of surfers everywhere.

From its earliest days, the brand drew inspiration from the raw power of the Pacific and the fearless surfers who dared to ride its most challenging waves. Lightning Bolt’s boards were crafted for those who pushed limits, sought perfection, and respected the deep connection between surfer and ocean. Every curve, every line, and every detail was designed with one purpose, to empower surfers to perform at their highest level and to carry the spirit of Hawaii across oceans and generations.

Our story aligns with a pivotal moment in the evolution of surfing. Hawaiian surfers, including the legendary Gerry Lopez and Rory Russell, redefined what was possible at Pipeline. Their unmistakable style and groundbreaking approach earned them international acclaim as the Style Masters. The world was mesmerized by how they gracefully combined the raw power and beauty of Pipeline.

Meanwhile, as Pipeline gained worldwide fame, Lightning Bolt became the most recognizable image and brand in surfboards. The bolt was the first thing visible emerging from the barrels, symbolizing not just the energy of Hawaiian surfing, but also the physical and artistic drive required to push the limits of what was possible on a surfboard, to do what had never been done before.

Lightning Bolt surfboards were designed to be as fast and agile as possible, a top-tier product for the elite. Naturally, Gerry Lopez teamed up with the experienced Jack Shipley to create a shop dedicated to the best surfers and shapers in Hawaii.

Gerry, Rory, BK, Reno, and Tom Parrish, regarded as the most influential shapers of Lightning Bolt, were the best surfers crafting the finest boards for the top surfers.
